Student Registration Information

How old does my child have to be to start school?
Under state law, a child must be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1 to enter kindergarten. To enter first grade, a child must be 6 on or before Sept. 1 and must have attended kindergarten.

What do I need to bring to register my child?
To register a child for the first time in any Florida school, you will need:

Important Immunization Information
There is a state requirement that seventh graders must have a series of three Hepatitis B injections, a tetanus booster and a second measles shot. They must offer proof of these immunizations before they can enroll in the seventh grade.

Where can my child get immunization shots and a physical exam?
See your private physician or visit one of the Orange County Health Department five clinics. Call 407/836-2600 for clinic locations.

When should I register my child for school?
You may go to the school your child will attend at any time to register him or her for school. If you are new to the area, you are encouraged to register your child as soon as possible. Previous school records or report cards help schools place students.

Which school will my child attend?
Each school has a designated attendance area, and the family's address determines which school the student will attend. Contact the Pupil Assignment office at 407/317-3233 and give them your child's home address.

Is there a Prekindergarten program available?
In 2002-2003, Orange County Public Schools will fund prekindergarten classrooms in thirty schools, including Orange Center, Richmond Heights, Eccleston, Fern Creek, Wheatley, Ivey Lane, Grand Avenue, Mollie Ray, Rock Lake, Orlo Vista, Ridgewood Park, Pine Hills, Maxey, Hiawassee, Pineloch, Rolling Hills, Lake Weston, Apopka Elementary, Catalina, Washington Shores, Palmetto, Lancaster, Hungerford, Shingle Creek, Ventura, Engelwood, Tangelo Park, Winegard, Rosemont, Sadler, and Lovell . Each class has a certified early childhood teacher and a paraprofessional who serve a maximum of 20 children. Children must be 4 yrs. old by Sept.1 to enroll and their families must meet certain income criteria.
Families of children at a participating elementary schools should go to the school to fill out a PreK application. For further information call the Prekindergarten office at 407-317-3522.
